Should you convert JPG to AVIF?

You’re optimizing a website and want the smallest photos possible. AVIF can often halve JPG sizes at the same visual quality.

A safe conversion when AVIF is what you need: both JPG and AVIF keep every pixel, so the picture itself doesn’t change.

Bear in mind AVIF is opens in current browsers and apps: it works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, but few editors, chat apps or upload forms.

JPG is a lossy photo format that trades detail you can’t see for much smaller files; AVIF is a modern image format that squeezes photos smaller than WebP. Use AVIF for photos on a website when you want the smallest files and can serve a fallback to older browsers.

How to convert JPG to AVIF

What changes when JPG becomes AVIF

Expect a smaller file

AVIF usually stores the same content in less space than JPG. JPG: A 12-megapixel phone photo is usually 2–5 MB. AVIF: Often around half the size of the equivalent JPG.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

  • About the JPG. Re-saving a JPG again and again degrades it, because each save compresses the already compressed version. Keep an original and export to JPG once, at the end.
  • About the AVIF. AVIF’s savings are real, but encoding is slow, so a batch that takes seconds as JPG can take minutes as AVIF.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Will converting JPG to AVIF lose quality?

AVIF is lossy, so some detail is discarded. The quality slider decides how much; the default of 90 is chosen so the difference is invisible in almost every photo.

Will the AVIF be smaller than the JPG?
