Should you convert AVIF to JPG?
AVIF images downloaded from modern websites won’t open in older photo viewers, Office documents or upload forms. JPG is the universal fallback.
A safe conversion when JPG is what you need: both AVIF and JPG keep every pixel, so the picture itself doesn’t change.
JPG is also the more widely supported of the two: it opens everywhere, while AVIF is opens in current browsers and apps.
AVIF is a modern image format that squeezes photos smaller than WebP; JPG is a lossy photo format that trades detail you can’t see for much smaller files. Use JPG for photographs you are sending, uploading or printing, especially when a form or app is fussy about formats.

What changes when AVIF becomes JPG
JPG can’t hold transparency
Any transparent area in the AVIF has to become a solid color, because JPG has no alpha channel. The background setting decides which color; white suits documents and most uploads, but pick the color of the page it will sit on if you know it, because it can’t be undone later.
Animations become a still
JPG can’t move, so an animated AVIF is saved as its first frame. Choose GIF or APNG instead to keep the animation.
Expect a larger file
JPG generally takes more room than AVIF. If the file has to fit an upload limit, check the size once it’s converted. AVIF: Often around half the size of the equivalent JPG. JPG: A 12-megapixel phone photo is usually 2–5 MB.

Why it doesn’t upload
Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.
How to check for yourselfWorth knowing
- About the AVIF. AVIF’s savings are real, but encoding is slow, so a batch that takes seconds as JPG can take minutes as AVIF.
- About the JPG. Re-saving a JPG again and again degrades it, because each save compresses the already compressed version. Keep an original and export to JPG once, at the end.
- DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.
Questions
Will converting AVIF to JPG lose quality?
JPG is lossy, so some detail is discarded. The quality slider decides how much; the default of 90 is chosen so the difference is invisible in almost every photo.
What happens to a transparent background when converting AVIF to JPG?
JPG has no transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background color you choose, white by default.
