Why it doesn’t upload

Photos carry faces, IDs and the location of your home. Upload-based compressors copy them to someone else’s server; FixMyFiles never sends them anywhere — which is also why there’s no queue, no daily cap and no file-size limit.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • Tiny targets (under ~30 KB) can’t be hit with quality alone — we shrink the pixel dimensions only when needed, and show you the final size.
  • PNG is lossless, so photos saved as PNG stay large. For small photos choose JPG or WebP.
  • Animated GIFs are saved as a still image (the first frame).
  • Photos above roughly 50 megapixels can exceed memory limits on phones; desktop browsers handle them.
  • AVIF gives the smallest files but takes a few seconds per photo to encode.
  • Hidden metadata (camera, date, GPS location) is removed from re-saved images.

Questions

How do I compress a photo to exactly 50 KB, 100 KB or 200 KB?

Choose Target size, type the number and pick KB, then press Compress. We try quality levels until we find the highest one under your limit. If quality alone can’t get there, we reduce the dimensions just enough and tell you.

Will compressing make my image look worse?

JPG, WebP and AVIF throw away detail you mostly can’t see. At 70–85% quality most photos look identical on screen. Aggressive targets (like 20 KB for a large photo) will soften detail — the Fit Meter shows the exact result so you can decide.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Compression runs in your browser using your device’s own processor. Open the Privacy Meter under the tool to watch the network log — it only shows our code loading, never your files.

Why can’t my PNG get as small as a JPG?

PNG never throws detail away, which suits screenshots and logos but makes photos huge. We reduce PNG colors when you set a target, but for photos switch Save as to JPG or WebP and they’ll shrink dramatically.

Can I compress a PNG without losing quality?

Yes, up to a point. Leave Save as on PNG and a lossless pass re-packs the file — identical pixels, typically 10–30% smaller. Screenshots and flat graphics do best. Going much below that means either reducing the number of colors or moving to JPG or WebP, and both of those change the picture.

What size should a photo be for a passport or visa form?

It depends on the portal: the US DS-160 wants a square JPEG up to 240 KB, India’s Passport Seva 630×810 px at 10–250 KB. Pick Passport photo above for the exact rule, or see every upload limit.

Can I compress many images at once?

Yes. Drop as many as you like — they’re processed in parallel on your device and you can download them all as a single ZIP.
