Should you convert BMP to AVIF?

A safe conversion when AVIF is what you need: both BMP and AVIF keep every pixel, so the picture itself doesn’t change.

Bear in mind AVIF is opens in current browsers and apps: it works in current Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari, but few editors, chat apps or upload forms.

BMP is an uncompressed grid of pixels; AVIF is a modern image format that squeezes photos smaller than WebP. Use AVIF for photos on a website when you want the smallest files and can serve a fallback to older browsers.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

  • About the BMP. BMP looks like a safe “raw” choice, but a single photo can run to tens of megabytes and most sites refuse it.
  • About the AVIF. AVIF’s savings are real, but encoding is slow, so a batch that takes seconds as JPG can take minutes as AVIF.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Will converting BMP to AVIF lose quality?

AVIF is lossy, so some detail is discarded. The quality slider decides how much; the default of 90 is chosen so the difference is invisible in almost every photo.
