Why it doesn’t upload
Uploading a photo to a website to remove its GPS location means handing that location to the website first. Here, the metadata is read and removed inside your browser, so it never leaves your device at all.
How to check for yourselfWorth knowing
- HEIC photos are saved as JPG, and AVIF and TIFF are re-saved, because a browser can’t safely rewrite those containers in place.
- Anything visible in the picture itself, such as a street sign or a house number, stays. Use Redact an Image for that.
- Video metadata, such as the location an iPhone writes into a clip, isn’t handled here yet.
Questions
What is photo metadata (EXIF)?
Extra data your phone or camera writes into each photo: date and time, phone model, lens, sometimes the camera’s serial number — and on most phones, the GPS coordinates of where you took it.
Do WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook remove GPS data?
Big social apps usually strip location when they recompress photos, but email attachments, cloud links, AirDrop, Telegram files, “send as document” and most websites deliver your original file — metadata included.
Does removing metadata reduce quality?
Not for JPG, PNG, WebP or GIF: we delete the metadata sections and copy the image data byte-for-byte. HEIC is converted to a high-quality JPG.
How can I check whether a photo has location data?

Which apps keep the location in photos I send?
Email attachments, AirDrop, cloud share links, Telegram and WhatsApp “send as document” all deliver the original file with its metadata. Chat apps that recompress photos usually drop it, but you can’t always tell which path a photo took.
