Should you convert HEIC to WEBP?

You’re putting iPhone photos on a website and want small, fast-loading images in a format browsers display natively.

A safe conversion when WEBP is what you need: both HEIC and WEBP keep every pixel, so the picture itself doesn’t change.

WEBP is also the more widely supported of the two: it opens in current browsers and apps, while HEIC is mainly an Apple format.

HEIC is the iPhone’s photo format, built on the HEVC video codec; WEBP is a web image format that can be lossy or lossless, with transparency and animation. Use WEBP for pictures on your own website or app, where every kilobyte affects load time.

What changes when HEIC becomes WEBP

iPhone photos convert with their orientation

Portrait photos stay upright, and Live Photos become a still WEBP. Location and camera details aren’t copied into the new file.

Expect a larger file

WEBP generally takes more room than HEIC. If the file has to fit an upload limit, check the size once it’s converted. HEIC: An iPhone photo is usually 1–3 MB. WEBP: Typically 25–35% smaller than the same JPG.

This page is put together from our notes on each format, choosing only what is true of HEIC and WEBP, so every pairing states the same facts the same way. How these pages are made.

Why it doesn’t upload

Changing a picture’s format is work your browser already knows how to do. Sending your photos to a server first only adds waiting and risk, so nothing is sent.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • About the HEIC. AirDrop and iCloud often convert photos to JPG for you, but cables, email and “Files” copies keep HEIC, so the same photo works on one computer and not another.
  • About the WEBP. Images saved from websites arrive as WEBP even when the page looked like it showed a JPG, and then a document editor or upload form refuses them.
  • DDS, PSD, EXR, XWD and JPEG 2000 are read by the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Questions

Will converting HEIC to WEBP lose quality?

WEBP is lossy, so some detail is discarded. The quality slider decides how much; the default of 90 is chosen so the difference is invisible in almost every photo.
