Increase the volume of an MP3 that is too quiet to hear on a phone, or bring down one that drowns out everything else. Move the level by an exact amount and save the file.

How to use it

    Drop in the audio that’s at the wrong level.

    Drag the slider. +6 dB is about twice as loud to the ear; −6 dB is about half.

    Press change volume and save the result. The original file is untouched.

Why it doesn’t upload

A voice note or a recording of a meeting is nobody else’s business. Your browser can change the level itself, so the file stays on your device.

How to check for yourself

Worth knowing

  • Boosting raises the background noise along with everything else, and a recording that was already loud can distort. If a file is much too quiet, try Normalize Audio instead.
  • This applies one change across the whole file. It doesn’t even out loud and quiet sections.
  • The audio is re-encoded, so lossy formats lose a little quality. Pick WAV or FLAC if that matters.
  • Uses the FFmpeg engine, a one-time 31 MB download.

Questions

How many decibels should I add?

Every +6 dB roughly doubles the perceived loudness, and +10 dB is about as far as you can push a normal recording before it starts to sound harsh. Start at +6 and listen.

Why does my file sound distorted after boosting?

The loudest parts hit the ceiling and clip. Use a smaller boost, or use Normalize Audio, which measures the file and leaves headroom so it can’t clip.

Can I make a video’s sound louder?

Not yet — this tool saves audio files. Pull the audio out with Extract Audio, change its level here, and a Replace Audio tool for putting it back is on the way.

Does it work on several files at once?

Yes. Every file gets the same change, and they come back together as a ZIP.
